Origin Without Romanticism

In the world of gemstones, origin is often spoken of with reverence. Certain localities such as Burma, Tanzania, Sri Lanka have earned exceptional reputations over time. Yet a place name alone cannot define a gemstone's beauty, value, or meaning.

But origin, on its own, guarantees nothing.

At PICS, we believe geographic origin should be understood as context, not a conclusion. It tells us the geological region in which a gemstone is believed to have formed — but not why it matters to you.

What Origin Can Tell Us — And What It Cannot

A gemstone’s place of origin offers insight into its geological conditions: the geological conditions under which its crystal structure formed, and the trace elements responsible for its colour.

Over time, certain regions have become associated with particular tendencies. Stones from Burma are often associated with richly saturated colours. Those from Tanzania are known for their diversity and vibrancy. Sri Lankan stones are frequently recognised for their brightness and clarity.

These observations exist for a reason — but they are not rules. Two stones from the same region can differ entirely in tone, character, and presence.Origin informs possibility, not outcome.

When Story Becomes a Shortcut

In the market, origin is often used as a narrative shortcut — a way to signal desirability without requiring deeper observation. Yet when origin becomes the decision-maker, we stop truly seeing the stone itself.

At PICS, we encourage a slower approach. One that pays attention to:

  • how colour behaves under different light

  • how the stone appears as it moves and changes angle

  • how its overall character reveals itself through careful observation

These qualities cannot be fully conveyed by a laboratory report alone.

Choosing With Awareness, Not Assumption

Understanding origin can refine perception. Romanticising it can limit it. A gemstone should be chosen not only for where it comes from, but for how it resonates — visually, emotionally, intuitively. Origin is part of the story, but never the whole story.

Discover the Hidden Beauty – Colored Stones – Exclusive Private Viewing Session 5

This session invites you to experience gemstones beyond geography and expectation. To see how origin shapes, but does not define. And to choose not by narrative, but by understanding.

Because in the end, what makes a gemstone meaningful is not the origin stated on a laboratory report — but what you recognise when you truly take the time to see it.

Session 5 will be held on 18-19 Jul 2026.
