Treatment, Enhancement, and Honest Disclosure

Few topics in the jewellery world create as much confusion as gemstone treatment.Words such as heated, filled, or coated are often spoken in hushed tones — as if any form of treatment automatically diminishes value.
The reality is more nuanced.
Understanding gemstone treatments is not about learning what to avoid, but about learning what questions to ask, and why transparency matters more than technical perfection.
Why Gemstone Treatments Exist
Most gemstones undergo some form of treatment. This is not a modern shortcut, but a long-established practice rooted in gem history and craftsmanship.
Treatments may be applied to:
stabilise stones formed under extreme geological conditions
enhance colour or clarity that already exists naturally
allow certain gemstones to be worn safely
Whether a gemstone has been treated does affect its market price and quality positioning; however, understanding the nature of that treatment and its implications is what enables an informed and appropriate choice.
Common Treatments — and What Truly Matters
Heat Treatment
One of the most traditional and widely accepted practices. Heat can improve colour and clarity by replicating natural geological processes that occur over time.
What matters:
Is the treatment stable and permanent?
Is it fully disclosed?
In many gemstone categories, heat treatment is considered standard practice when communicated transparently.

Fillers
Used to improve apparent clarity by filling surface-reaching fractures.
What matters:
Does the filler affect durability?
Is the stone suitable for daily wear?
Are care requirements clearly explained?
Fillers can influence longevity, making honest explanation essential.

Coatings
Applied to alter surface colour or surface appearance.
What matters:
Is the effect permanent or superficial?
Can wear, cleaning, or time change the appearance?
Because coatings affect the surface rather than the structure, they require particular care and clarity in disclosure.

Structural Impact vs Emotional Impact
Not all treatments affect gemstones in the same way.
Some treatments influence structure — durability, stability, and care.Others influence emotional perception — how one feels about naturalness, rarity, or authenticity.
Neither response is right or wrong.
What matters is alignment:
understanding how a treatment affects the stone physically
and how it aligns with your own values and expectations
Luxury is not about avoiding complexity —it is about navigating it with clarity.
Transparency Is Not a Technical Detail — It Is a Value
True luxury does not rely on ambiguity.
Honest disclosure is not merely a line on a certificate; it is a reflection of respect between jeweller and wearer. It allows informed decisions, realistic expectations, and long-term appreciation.
While treatments are a normal and long-established part of the gemstone world, at PICS, the majority of the gemstones we work with remain untreated. This is not a rule, nor a statement of purity, but a reflection of our preference for stones whose colour, structure, and character are expressed naturally.
When treatments are present, they are always disclosed and discussed openly — because understanding matters more than labels.
Seeing Stones Clearly
Certificates and images can only communicate so much.Side-by-side viewing of treated and untreated stones — carefully labelled and explained — reveals differences that words alone cannot.
Seeing stones in person allows you to understand:
how treatments affect aesthetics and colour
whether those differences matter to you
how knowledge shapes perception
Understanding replaces uncertainty.
An Invitation to Learn, Not to Judge
May’s “Discover the Hidden Beauty – Colored Stones – Exclusive Private Viewing Session 4” is designed as an educational experience — not a test of knowledge or preference.
It is a space to ask questions, observe differences, and form your own perspective on treatment and enhancement.
Because informed appreciation is not about rigid rules, but about honesty, clarity, and choice.
Session 4 will be held on 23-24 May 2026.
